Sony Model TC-558

The SONY TC-558 virtually controls itself for hours of continuous bi-directional operation – record or playback. There’s a three position Reverse Mode Selector Switch that lets you program for continuous reverse, one-way reverse or non-reverse. And Auto-Reverse is just part of a superb selection of outstanding features.

There are six separate tape heads - three for each direction of tape travel - giving you Tape/Source Monitoring - plus assuring the kind of reproduction quality you'd expect from a deck in this class. That's not all. You record and play back over SONY's exclusive Ferrite and Ferrite Heads, and erase over ferrite heads. They'll last up to 200 times longer than standard permalloy heads, with the additional performance benefits of improved tape-to-head contact, wider frequency response and reduced noise and distortion.

Symphase Recording enables you to record 4-channel sound from an SQ* or FM matrix source for playback through four speakers and a decoder-equipped 4-channel amplifier without phase differences between channels. The tape drive mechanism is protected by Logic Controlled Transport Functions, letting you activate the Feather-Touch Control Buttons in any sequence without breaking or spilling tape.

The TC-558's 3-Motor System incorporating a Servocontrol Capstan Motor, assures accurate, stable tape movement despite fluctuations in line current. And its simplified mechanism keeps mechanical wear to a minimum,

You can use either standard or low noise/high output recording tape with optimum results, thanks to the Record Equalization and Bias Selector Switches. And Automatic Total Mechanism Shut-Off returns all functions to stop at end-of-tape in any mode.

The TC-558 also features Built-in Mic/Line Mixing so you can record from two stereo sources simultaneously. And there's a long list of other features that combine to make one impressive tape deck.

The SONY TC-558 Stereo Tape Deck with Automatic Reverse. You'll never hear the end of it.
