Tape Deck Remote Control Plugs

Some tape decks that were equipped for use with wired remote controls require a plug be installed in the socket when the remote control is not in place. If the plug or remote control is not used, the transport controls will not function. Symptoms are: the deck powers on but does nothing when the Fast Forward, Rewind and/or Play buttons are pushed. Note that other problems can cause these symptoms as well!

Following are a few of the decks that fall into this category and, where known, the characteristics of the required plugs. This is an incomplete list and additions to it are solicited. Thanks to Steven Bender, Art Covert, Dave Hendricksen, Don Nattinger, Jay Selman and Don Walterman for their contributions.

1. Sockets marked "Remote Control RC-16"

2. Sockets marked "Remote Control RC-120"

3. For models using Remote Control RC-140

4. For models using Remote Control RC-100

5. A deck from each group is pictured. The socket location for others within the group may be much different.

6. Pin numbering conventions:

a. Many of these plugs resemble the base of a vacuum tube. A protrusion on the side of the center pin is used to align the outer pins. When looking at the socket, the outer pin that is either directly in line with the index slot (which accommodates the protrusion), or is the first one to the left of it, is Number 1. The numbers increase in counterclockwise direction from there. Note that the plug designations are mirror images of the socket. Some plugs have only 8 or 9 pins but the numbering convention is the same.

b. The Otari MX-5050 plug is a rectangular type with 12 spades. I numbered them from top right to bottom left on the socket as shown in the following table:

10
7
4
1
11
8
5
2
12
9
6
3

c. The Teac A1200 plug has 1 center pin and 3 on the circumference of a small circle. I numbered the center pin 1 and the others 2,3 and 4. Because all three outside pins are shorted together, the designation is not important.

d. Revox A-77 uses a 10-pin socket with Pins 1-7 on the circumference, 8-10 in the center. Indexing is through a missing pin to the left of Pin #1. Pin 7 carries +27 VDC so care should be taken to avoid shorting that one accidentally. See the schematic picture above for clarification.

e. Teac X-10R uses a rectangular plug, about which we have no details- HELP!

8. For models using the SRC-1 and SRC-2 Remote Controls

9. Sockets marked "Remote Control RC-18"
