I read on this forum that a number of folks have had various probs with the GX-265D. I've got one problem that I just cannot solve.
My GX-265D runs fine in forward direction - both channels play fine - but in reverse it will only play the left channel. And the clarity of recording is not as good as the forward channel. All other aspects of the Akai work fine. The Akai has not been used for about a year before this.
From what I understand, this indicates that either the head switch or the record switch on the record circuit board are dirty and require cleaning.
I've tried switch cleaner on both but with no luck (I'm using Servisol with an attached tube to reach as far as I can into the switch).
Have other forum members had the same problem and solved it?
Is there another area on the machine that I should be looking at?

Any help in solving this would be really appreciated.

Cheers.

Having looked at more posts, it seems that I really have to get into the 'bowels' of those two switches. Having sat for a good year without use, there is bound to be detritus preventing the reverse channels working properly. But I really don't fancy removing either of the switchs ;-(
I'd be interested to hear from others who have solved the problem of switch cleaning though.

Best thing is to take the head switch apart but they are a little difficult to remove so maybe you could try to spray some contact cleaner in the switch first. This might solve the problem for a while. Personally I have never been a great fan of the GX-265D and GX-260D machines. The GX-266D/267D and GX-266II are amongst my favourites. They have the head switch located on the audio circuitry board and are much easier to remove and to clean.

An update

I found that the switches were fine - both the head switch and the record/play switch.

The problem was the playback head. The right channel on the playback head had gone short. The result was no output other than a low hum.
I tracked down a new ex stock head from the USA (Reel Pro Sound), installed it and Bingo! No problem aligning the head and equal output from both playback heads. Still can't believe that I found a replacement head ;-)
